Time & Tide: Life on the South West’s Coasts & Waterways

Tavistock Town Hall, Bedford Square, Tavistock, PL19 0AU This symposium delves into the vibrant tapestry of life along the South West’s coasts and waterways, tracing how communities and landscapes have been shaped by the ebb and flow of tides, rivers, and trade. From bustling harbours, tranquil estuaries, and wild headlands to the intricate networks of canals, quays, and inlets, the region’s shores have fostered unique cultures, livelihoods, and traditions. Daily life, industry, and recreation intertwine with the maritime environment: where fishing boats set out at dawn, shipyards echo with craft and labour, and riverside settlements reflect stories of adaptation, resilience, and connection to the water’s edge.

Talks will reflect on the varied character of the coasts and waterways of Devon and Cornwall.

Displays and stalls will be provided by Devon and Cornwall Archaeological Societies, Historic England, Tavistock Heritage Trust and Plymouth Archaeology Society. Participants will also be able to visit the Tavistock Ship Painting exhibit in the nearby Tavistock Guildhall.
