The ‘Vikings’, the ‘Viking Age’, the ‘Viking world’ and the ‘Viking diaspora’ are a never-ending source of popular fascination but also misinformation and disinformation in today’s global and digitally connected world. This talk tackles two interconnected problems that archaeologists have long struggled with: (1) how do archaeologists rethink the Viking Age and (2) how do we best tell the stories we reveal from archaeological data about Vikings for today’s world? To answer this question, Howard looks at burial evidence to consider fresh ways of interpreting ‘Viking’ death rituals and new strategies for sharing this work to audiences in the early 21st century. Together this leads to a third challenge: how and to what extent can we apply this to western Britain, including Cornwall?
