Walk to the striking prehistoric monuments, and other coastal sites, around Pendower Beach, on the Roseland, Sunday 6th June 2021.
After a year when CAS group walks have not been possible, we are delighted to be able to invite Members to join an archaeological outing again. It’s a joint initiative, with partner organisations the Old Cornwall Society, and the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) unit in Cornwall Council. Depending on the response to this invitation, and our experience on the day, and of course on the Covid 19 situation and restrictions, we would hope to be able to plan other walks soon.
In view of the potentially changing situation with Covid 19, this will require pre-booking (please see details below) to ensure we gather in a safe numbers; and it will be subject to confirmation nearer the time.
The walk has been devised by Nev Meek, Recorder with the Gerrans and Portscatho Old Cornwall Society and expert on this historic coast, and is co-ordinated by Jacob Parry, the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)’s Monumental Improvement Activities Officer. It will be guided jointly by Nev, and Cathy Parkes CAS walks organiser and CAU archaeologist. Amongst other intriguing sites we’ll be looking at Dingerein Castle where Nev has arranged special access courtesy of the landowner; Veryan Beacon, Cornwall’s largest Bronze Age barrow, excavated in 1855; archaeology of the beach itself at Pendower, recorded site of a submerged forest; and stories of the coastal hotel there, where a bungalow was once shifted by the wind!
If you would like to join the walk, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org to let Jacob know, so he can confirm and send further information about the walk, closer to the time.
