Ann Preston Jones: St Piran’s Cross: A Cornish Icon reconsidered
The granite St Piran’s Cross, standing in the dunes north of Perranporth, close to the ruins of St Piran’s Church, is generally believed to be identical with a feature called the cristelmael in the bounds of the tenth century Tywarnhayle charter. In this lecture, the name and dating of the cross will be considered, and suggestions as to a fresh interpretation of the stone’s origin. This talk was originally intended to be given at the AGM in April along with other tributes to Professor Charles Thomas.
