SUMMARY:Penzance Lecture - Porths and Gigs of the Isles of Scilly with Cath
 y Parkes
DESCRIPTION:Archaeology of the Pilot Gig Boats\n\nThis project\, by the Cor
nwall Archaeological Unit\, was funded by Historic England\, FiPL\, and CA
S\, to help address the increasing risk to the archaeology of the pilot gi
g sheds. These sites\, used for vital pilotage\, salvage and rescue at sea
\, are now subject to accelerating coastal erosion\, and gradual sea level
rise.\n\nThe work presented includes local knowledge\, kindly contributed
on the islands\, with plan drawings by Mark Bowden\, and virtual 3D model
s by Tom Goskar. It captures the distinctive earthworks of gig sheds\; the
ir routes\, running through inter-tidal rocks\; hilltop lookouts\; and par
ts of the historic gigs themselves.\n\nAmong the sheds recorded are the ho
uses of gigs still known by name\, some of which are still kept on the isl
ands and compete with the many gigs now built on traditional lines in the
thriving sport of gig racing.\n\nCathy Parkes\n\nCathy Parkes\, from Falmo
uth\, has worked for the Cornwall Archaeological Unit since 1987\, special
ising in the ways communities have contributed to the creation of the endl
essly interesting landscape of Cornwall and Scilly. This includes the ways
people have negotiated the wild shorelines\, exemplified by her recent re
search on the history and archaeology of Scilly’s pilot gigs.\n\nFree of
charge - pre-booking required\nIf you are not a CAS Member we welcome a
£3.00 donation at the door towards costs.\n\nTo book use our Ticket Tailo
