Training Days are designed to help all those CAS Members who wish to participate in our Monument Watch programme. The Society assists Historic England and Cornwall Council archaeologists in monitoring and recording the state of Scheduled Monuments and other sites of historic interest in Cornwall. The procedure for assessing and recording monuments has been agreed with the professional archaeologists, and regular training sessions are provided for those members taking part.
Monument Watch is co-ordinated by the Area Representatives, and is an important activity carried out by the Society.
This year we will be concentrating our Monument Watch efforts on monitoring the condition of, and risks to PREHISTORIC ENCLOSURES under the guidance of Ann Preston Jones, Hannah Curnow and Nick Johnson. Monuments of this type in Cornwall include early prehistoric enclosures such as Tor Enclosures and Henges and later prehistoric defended enclosures such as Hillforts, Cliff Castles and Rounds.
We had hoped to be able to visit Carn Brea and Tregonning Hill as they are magnificent archaeological sites but have been defeated by the overwhelming growth of bracken! Instead we have sought a variety of enclosures in mid Cornwall that have good parking. As always, be prepared for rough walking and rain. Bring a packed lunch and plenty of water. Notes and maps of the sites will be provided. The programme for the day is as follows:
10.30 Assemble at Castle an Dinas carpark (Satnav: Castle an Dinas, Saint Columb Major Grid Ref. SW9458 6206) to transfer into as few cars as possible.
- 00 Helman Tor Neolithic Tor Enclosurecar park managed by Cornwall Wildlife Trust (Satnav: Heman Tor car park, Lanlivery. SX 0620 6140)

If we have the time and the energy left we can finish the day at Trevelgue Cliff Castle (Satnav: Porth Beach Car Park, St Columb Minor SW 8321 6293).
