SUMMARY:Joint CAS/Prehistoric Society Lecture – Sighting the Sun — and
moon? — at Stonehenge with Clive Ruggles
DESCRIPTION:As Emeritus Professor of Archaeoastronomy at the University of
Leicester\, Clive has spent a lifetime investigating ancient people’s pe
rceptions of the sky and the uses they make of what they see there. Archae
oastronomy is an interdisciplinary field prone to misinterpretation and sp
eculation and Clive's particular concern is to find the best ways to combi
ne approaches from “hard science” and anthropology in order to reach s
ensible and robust conclusions. In 2017 he was awarded  the Royal Astrono
mical Society’s Agnes Mary Clerke Medal for a “lifetime of distinguish
ed work in the overlapping areas of archaeology\, astronomy and the histor
y of science". He is also a former President of the Prehistoric Society.\n
