DESCRIPTION:Chris Smart is an archaeologist and specialist in the landscape
  archaeology of Roman and medieval Britain. He has managed the National Lo
 ttery Heritage Fund project ‘Understanding Landscapes’ which is engagi
 ng the public in research on Roman and medieval landscapes in Devon and Co
 rnwall.\n\nThis lecture will draw upon latest research undertaken as part 
 of the University of Exeter’s recent ‘Unlocking Landscapes’ project\
 , which took a crowd-sourced approach to the mapping of archaeological lan
 dscapes in the South West using new LiDAR data. It will present evidence f
 or a far-reaching Roman road network crossing the region\, explore the wid
 er extent of military activity that is now apparent\, and its context.\n\n
