Chris Smart is an archaeologist and specialist in the landscape archaeology of Roman and medieval Britain. He has managed the National Lottery Heritage Fund project ‘Understanding Landscapes’ which is engaging the public in research on Roman and medieval landscapes in Devon and Cornwall.
This lecture will draw upon latest research undertaken as part of the University of Exeter’s recent ‘Unlocking Landscapes’ project, which took a crowd-sourced approach to the mapping of archaeological landscapes in the South West using new LiDAR data. It will present evidence for a far-reaching Roman road network crossing the region, explore the wider extent of military activity that is now apparent, and its context.
Cornish Archaeology Online is a series of talks that is open to all. Talks will take place over Zoom and will explore Archaeology in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
