St Mary's, Isles of Scilly
Charlie Johns will show us around St Mary’s including some of the medieval sites of Old Town, the church, Harold Wilson’s grave, Castle Ennor and the old quay. Then on to Giant’s Castle IA promontory fort, the BA entrance grave cemetery on Porth Hellick Down, Toll’s Hill with Civil War batteries and if the tide is out kelp pits, prehistoric field boundaries and Civil War redoubt on Toll’s Island. After lunch at Cove Vean café we will cut across to the other side of the island to look at Bant’s Carn entrance grave, the RB settlement on Halangy Down and BA/IA remains exposed in the cliff face at Halangy Porth. From there it’s a walk along the cliff path to Hugh Town perhaps stopping for tea at Juliet’s Garden. Included also may be a visit to the Isles of Scilly museum.
Using this year’s timetable as a rough guide it is envisaged leaving on the 8am Skybus flight from Land’s End airport to arrive approx. 20 mins later at St Mary’s airport. The return flight would leave about 5pm. Return flights this year cost £105.
